Barcode Generator

A small business labeling inventory, a student project needing a sample product barcode, or a hobby seller listing items that need scannable labels — generating a real, scannable barcode used to require specialized software. This tool creates a properly formatted barcode from any text or number, ready to download.

Choosing the right barcode format

CODE128 is the most flexible format, accepting letters, numbers, and many symbols, making it a safe default for general use. EAN-13 is the standard format used on retail products worldwide (the 13-digit barcode you see on most store products), required if you're listing a product on major marketplaces that check for valid EAN codes. UPC is the 12-digit standard mainly used in the US and Canada retail systems. CODE39 is an older, simpler alphanumeric format still used in some inventory and logistics systems.

Where a barcode generator is useful

Creating internal inventory labels for a small business or warehouse that doesn't need official retail-registered barcodes. Generating a sample barcode for a school or training project on point-of-sale systems or inventory management. Producing a scannable code for an asset tag, library book, or personal cataloging system. Testing a barcode scanner app or piece of software during development without needing a physical product on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a generated EAN-13 barcode to sell a product on Amazon or in retail stores? No — official retail barcodes need to be purchased and registered through GS1 (the organization that issues legitimate, globally unique product codes); a barcode generated here is correctly formatted and scannable, but isn't a registered, legally unique product identifier for commercial retail use.

Why did my barcode not generate? Certain formats have strict requirements — EAN-13 needs exactly 13 digits and UPC needs exactly 12 digits; entering the wrong number of digits or non-numeric characters for these formats will cause generation to fail, so switch to CODE128 for more flexible input.

Is my input uploaded anywhere? No — the barcode is generated entirely in your browser using a client-side JavaScript library; nothing is sent to a server.
